Toll Bridge Wood occupies level ground half a mile south of the small village of Drumoak above the banks of the River Dee. The proximity of the A92 at Drumoak means Aberdeen city centre is a half hour drive, while the city bypass 15 minutes away gives ready access to north and south. The attractions of the Cairngorms National Park and Royal Deeside to the west are close at hand.
This attractive plantation of Sitka spruce is in production phase having already produced timber through a previous thinning operation. The trees are of good form and hold the promise of some quality timber. The northeast is blessed with a good variety of sawmills and the unrestricted routes nearby promise easy delivery to the mill. The woodland itself is well drained and the level terrain within further facilitates easy management and harvesting.
Access is taken directly off the adjacent public road via the well-found hard track on its northwest side.
Aside from being stocked with commercial conifers, Toll Bridge Wood has obvious amenity credentials being sited in a beautiful riverside location. Though it does not own the thin strip of riverside bank adjacent, it enjoys a superb outlook across the River Dee which is just a few metres away.
Toll Bridge Wood is that rare thing – a quality small commercial woodland with outstanding amenity. As such it should appeal to anyone wishing to combine a spot of silviculture with quiet enjoyment.
If It Were Mine
Another few years should allow a further thinning of the crop with the expectation of felling the entire in the next 10 years or so. There is a small pocket of windblow in the easternmost corner (a legacy from Storm Arwen in 2021) which I would want to tidy up. This would also produce a healthy supply of logs for my wood-burner.
After felling in the longer term I would want to see this wood growing hardwoods. The site is fertile and well suited to a variety of species which could be grown for both habitat and timber production. I would also incorporate an open area in the restock design for quiet enjoyment next to the river.
