Forming part of a wider woodland area known as Roundwyck Copse, Nuthatch Wood is situated 5 miles north of the 17th-century town of Petworth in rural West Sussex. The majority of Nuthatch Wood is classed as both Ancient Woodland and Ancient Replanted Woodland (PAWS). Access is through a locked gate and along a series of tracks. 

Located over undulating loamy clays, the mature woodland canopy to the south is a blend of oak, ash, birch and field maple. A level and relatively open area near a meandering stream to the west contains some lofty and well-spaced poplar, along with some widespread and beautiful lichen adorning a clump of hawthorn.  

A block of roughly 1.3 acres of mature Norway spruce (this is the PAWS area) to the north/northeast could potentially be felled and replanted with a selection of native broadleaf species, or perhaps trial some more exotic species if suitable to the site. In the shrub layer, you will find holly, hawthorn, young field maple and hazel coppice; some of the larger hazel stems could provide a domestic fuel supply if gently thinned, allowing the subsequent stools to regenerate over the years. Come warmer months, the ground layer is awash with typical woodland flora, including wood anemone, wild clary, lesser celandine, daffodil and pungent ransoms (wild garlic).

Woodland creatures, including roe, muntjac and red deer, fox and hare, are all known to the locale. Abundant feathered visitors such as nightingale, owl, tree creeper, buzzard and many songsters seek refuge in the tree canopy. 

The woodland is subject to an Article 4 Direction, which means that full planning permission would be required for activities usually covered under permitted development rights.
