View More Details
Burnside Wood lies on the south side of a larger gated wood in a rural location midway between Neilston and Newton Mearns, a short distance from Darnley Country Park. Junction 4 of the M77 is 2 miles to the east giving easy access from Glasgow, Ayrshire and the Central Belt. Most of the wood occupies level ground except for a pronounced bowl on the east side which is populated with spruce. Apart from the conifers, the trees are generously spaced. This in conjunction with an extensive outlook to the southwest makes for a light and welcoming wood. We believe most of the hardwoods date from the late 1970s with sycamore being the dominant species. There are also minor elements of birch, beech and hawthorn. The base of the ‘bowl’ is more densely stocked with Sitka spruce while the fringing banks support a light mosaic of other conifers including larch and pine. The woodland floor is dominated by soft grasses and ferns and is generally clear of entangling vegetation making for easy access across the wood. In spring and summer there is a good show of woodland flowers including drifts of bluebells. A substantial hard track accessible to 2WD cars connects the wood with the public road. There is a generous private parking spur on the north side of the wood. Surrounded by countryside and with good access, Burnside ticks a lot of amenity boxes. If It Were Mine I would consider felling the spruce and replacing them with native site-appropriate species such as willow, alder and birch, perhaps with a small pond at the centre. The light density of stems elsewhere also encourages enrichment planting with native broadleaves – I’d opt for fruiting species to encourage the birds. A few nest boxes also appeal. Summer nights with a BBQ and the odd night under canvas? Certainly! Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
View More Details
